In the intimacy of the gallery’s salon, the paintings of Peter Marcasiano (1921–1984) continue their presence. Following the group exhibition “My Onion Canvases are Ballet ——————————— The other canvases are also Ballet”, they are revealed in a new display, extending their juxtaposition with the furniture of Noir Métal. Having settled in Paris in the late 1960s, Marcasiano painted for some fifteen years, until his death in 1984, a body of works that never left his apartment in the 18th arrondissement. Still lifes with recurring motifs — onions, fish, flowers — are rendered in a restrained palette, applied in thin, almost translucent layers, and convey a haunting presence sustained by repetition. Marcasiano’s works continue their dialogue with those of Noir Métal, a duo founded in Brussels in 2020 by Nicolas Bourthoumieux and Julien Dumond. Their pieces — easels, furniture, or lighting — both support and reveal the works, while existing in their own right. Shaped with close attention to material and processes of making, they offer the exhibition a singular grammar, at once raw and precise. In the salon, they resonate with Marcasiano’s painting, itself born of the domestic space and of a persistent attention to the simplest forms.
